Firefox Could Pass IE by Next Summer

  • By Adam Duvander

IE and Firefox market share over time

The latest browser statistics are out and show Firefox continues to gain on Internet Explorer. Only nine percentage points of market share separate the open source favorite from its Microsoft competitor. If the trend continues, the wily canine could out-fox IE by this time next year (summer in the northern hemisphere).

Both IE 7 and Firefox have seen an increase in their adoption rates over the last six months. Firefox added 6.2%, its largest six month gain since 2006. IE 7 almost kept pace, adding 5.2%, but IE 6 lost 11.6% during the same period.

At a rate of almost one percentage point per month, Firefox could take over Internet Explorer as the web’s most popular browser in 2009. What will life look like without IE atop the browser stats?
