Adobe Updates: Photoshop Improves Leopard Support, Lightroom Gets An SDK

photoshop.jpgPhotoshop CS3 and its related brethren, Lightroom, Bridge and Camera Raw, have received their first major updates since the CS3 suite was initially released. While some of the changes are specific to Apple’s new Leopard OS, there’s plenty of fixes for the Windows versions as well.

Photoshop 10.0.1 addresses probably the number one annoyance of CS3 users — printing. Photoshop CS3 brought a host of changes to Photoshop’s printing mechanism and while they were designed to make the print process easier, they also introduced all sort of strange behavior.

Photoshop forums are littered with posts about color issues, lost profiles and other color management problems. Perhaps the strangest of these was that printing an image from PPC Mac with identical settings to that of an Intel Mac still resulted in different colors. Adobe says today’s update should resolve that and a host of other known printing problems.

One thing to keep in mind if you’re on a Leopard Mac — today’s update does not address a problem with changing the values for various tools on Mac OS X Leopard. John Nack, Photoshop’s Senior Product Manager, says that the company is working together with Apple to provide on a separate fix for that issue.

Perhaps the most significant update in these releases is Lightroom 1.3 which, yes, improves compatibility with Mac OS X Leopard and some newer digital cameras, but more importantly adds support for the new Lightroom Export SDK.

At the moment the SDK is on the Adobe Labs site, which means it may not be ready for prime time, but even so, it’s good news for Lightroom users who’ve been craving an easy way to upload to their favorite photo sharing sites.

There’s nothing available at the moment, but Adobe is soliciting developer feedback and we’ll keep you posted when the plug-ins start to arrive.

To get these updates you can run the Adobe Updater application, or download them directly from the Adobe sites: Photoshop (Mac, Win), Bridge (Mac, Win) Lightroom (Mac, Win) and Camera Raw (Mac, Win)
