At Long Last: Windows XP SP3 Arrives, Again

winxplogo.jpgA Microsoft representative e-mailed Wired.com to let us know that Windows XP SP3 is finally available — this time for real. SP 3 has been added back to the automatic update list, though there is a filter in place which will stop the download if you happen to be running Microsoft’s Dynamic Retail Management System application.

However, for the vast majority that aren’t affected by the last minute bugs which delayed the release of XP SP3, the update is finally available.

You can grab the direct download from Microsoft or run Windows Update. If you’re one of the few that use Microsoft’s Dynamic Retail Management System application, the company says it will be updating both XP SP3 and Vista SP1 to solve the problems.

Following last week’s discovery of a compatibility issue between both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista SP1 and Microsoft Dynamics RMS, Microsoft created and deployed a filter on Windows Update that will not offer either service packs to Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers. A fix for this issue is currently in testing at Microsoft and with customers and we hope to make it publicly available this month. Until then, Microsoft is advising Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers to not install either service pack.

I still haven’t updated my dedicated XP machine, but I did update a version running under VMWare Fusion on my Mac and haven’t had any trouble with it (I should note that I also haven’t noticed any real difference either).

For more info on the update, have a look at the Microsoft XP site.
