Friday Roundup

Some of the news bites from the web world that made us turn our heads this week:

Y! buys del.icio.us — Yahoo! continues its move from the search/portal sphere into the Web 2.0 arena. The internet giant announced today that it has purchased del.icio.us, the bookmark-and-tag-based community site. Yahoo! already owns Flickr, the tag-based photo sharing site, and we all hope that everyone continues to get along well together. Congrats to del.icio.us’ Joshua from everyone here at Webmonkey.

Portable Firefox 1.5 is released — The portable version of the popular open-source browser lets you take the application to any machine and run it with your own personal preferences, cookies, history, bookmarks, and secure data. Going to auntie’s house in the redwoods for a week? Take all your settings with you. And, best of all, the browser doesn’t leave any of your personal information behind. The machine stays as clean as it was when you first got there.

Share calendars with HipCal — Need an online calendar and contact list? How about an online calendar that allows sharing and multi-user updates? HipCal says, “It’s about time.”

Now that’s what we call an extraordinary rendition! — Finally, this isn’t necessarily web dev related, but our favorite musical ensemble has recorded a new theme song for one of our favorite shows. That’s right, Medeski Martin & Wood and ESPN’s Sports Center share the love. Download the tune at Ropeadope.com.
