Gmail Gains Group Chat Features

gmail.jpgGoogle Chat is available in three flavors, the Google Chat gadget, the Gmail interface and the desktop app. Unfortunately the three don’t totally overlap in functionality, but today Google has added group chat to the Gmail incarnation, bringing it up to speed with its gadget companion, which has had the group chat feature for several months.

To use the new group chat feature, just initiate a chat with one of your contacts, and then click on “Options” and select “Group Chat” to invite others.

On the downside, the group chat options will only show up if you’ve got the new version of Gmail. Worse, your contacts must also be using either the gadget or the new version of Gmail, making your options somewhat limited at the moment.

Still, as Google upgrades more users to the new version of Gmail, the group chat features will make Google chat more useful for most people. The Gmail version of Google Chat also now support smileys if that’s your thing.
