MySpace Video’s Slow Slide

MySpace is getting squeezed out of the video sharing marketplace by YouTube, Google and MSN. Recent HitWise data, as reported by ReelPop, shows that MySpace Video, the video-sharing component of the community site MySpace, has lost three percent market share in the last two months. They dropped from a 23.76% share in July to 20.86% this month.

Three percent may not seem like a lot, but consider that the online video sharing market is already crowded by major players, and that it's getting even more crowded all the time. Just today, Microsoft announced Soapbox, their own video sharing service.

MySpace Video was a gamble by MySpace to grab even more eyeballs among social networkers, and after an initial flurry of activity, it seems that at least some of the bloggers and MySpacers have gone back to YouTube for video sharing. If they even left in the first place.

So who's the big winner? Google Video, which jumped from 5% to over 11% during the July to September time period.
