Paint Your E-Mail Red: Gmail Adds Colored Labels
Gmail has added a much requested feature to the new interface that debuted last month — color-coded labels. Yes, at long last you can have different colors for your labels, and perhaps even more useful, is a new “M&M” label option — a much more noticeable block of color with the label name in white text.
To use the colored labels just click on the small box to the right of each label and you’ll see a drop down menu with the new color options. There are twelve colors available and each can either be used to color the text of your labels or be displayed inverted — a colored box with the label name in white text.
You must be using the new “Gmail 2.0” interface in order to see the new color options.
There were of course Greasemonkey scripts to enable colored labels in the past, but since Gmail’s new interface broke most of those this should be good news for those who’ve been clamoring for color labels.
Also interesting, in the blog post linked above the Gmail team drops this tidbit: “we actually kinda like folders. In fact, we’re doing some work to add some folder-y-ish functionality. Stay tuned.” Drag-and-drop message filing would certainly be nice, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
