Rumor: Leopard Finalized, Apple Preps For October Release

Leopard_2
According to an AppleInsider report citing unnamed sources, the next version of Apple’s operating system has been finalized.

Rumor has it that "Gold master" copies of Mac OS X Leopard have been sent to manufacturers and support materials have been distributed to Apple employees so that they may familiarize themselves with new features and the different upgrade paths. Epicenter’s Bryan Gardiner has more details.

For the curious, it looks like Leopard build 9A559, which was distributed to developers and beta testers last month, is the same build that was upgraded to final release candidate status. Whether or not that’s the same build which was released to manufacturing (presuming Apple has actually released anything to manufacturers, as details are sketchy) is still up for debate.

AppleInsider also says an update is arriving soon for 10.4, which will be the final update for Tiger and which will address around 50 minor bug fixes.

Either way, Leopard is due this month. Call us impatient, but Apple is quickly running out of time to let us know when we’ll be able to purchase the final release of the OS. Bryan has pinned October 26 as the most likely date on his iCal. Scott and I are betting on October 30.

The Apple site still says "Arriving in October," for what it’s worth.
