Safari on Windows, Now With Spell Check and Full Text Searching

Safari_logoUnlike its Mac cousin, Safari for Windows is still a beta, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t improving. A new update adds spelling and grammar check features, as well as full text history searches, better font smoothing, and an improved bookmark collection interface.

One of the more interesting refinements in the latest Safari for Windows is the ability to resize windows from any side, rather than just the lower left corner. The left corner option is a hangover from the Mac platform where that’s the main way to resize a window, but it’s nice to see Apple adhering to standard Windows behavior even if it might be contrary to its own aesthetics.

It would be nice if Apple offered an option to ditch the brushed metal look as well, since that doesn’t really fit the Windows platform either, but so far that’s not an option.

Another noteworthy new feature is the improved history search. If you head into the history page and start a search Safari will look in the text of visited websites, rather than just the titles and URLs. Opera 9.5 and the coming Firefox 3 offer similar full text searches.

Along with the new features Safari for Windows 3.0.4 also brings a plethora or bug fixes and stability improvements as well as some new keyboard shortcuts. For a complete rundown on all the new tuff, check out the Apple download page.

Safari for Windows is free and the update can be grabbed either by running Apple Software Update or downloading the installer from the Apple site.
