The Secret Language of Sleep

Long-time Webmonkey and Monkey Bites readers should have no difficulty remembering the name of Evany Thomas. Nay, quite the opposite — how could one forget? Evany’s name probably fills you with warm, soft fuzziness and mild excitement. Evany totally ran this place for, oh, about seven years. She served as Webmonkey’s Managing Editor and all-around “decider” of things editorial. Not to mention the fact that she showed yours truly just about everything I know about editing, writing, and running an educational tech site. She carries the spirit, let’s put it that way.

As Monkey Biter Paul mentioned last month, Evany Thomas has a book out called The Secret Language of Sleep, published by McSweeney’s. It has very, very little to do with web development or technology, a detail of which Evany is in fact quite proud. You can read all about her book at her site, Evany.com. It’s a very handsome site (which I must mention since I helped Evany format her <div>s).

She is heading out on some publicity events in the near future, including this gala in Los Angeles:

Evany will be presenting her ideas via the powers of Powerpoint in “McSweeney’s Presents: The World, Explained,” a benefit for 826LA. Other guests include: Davy Rothbart (creator of Found Magazine), Starlee Kine (of This American Life), Joshua Davis (author of The Underdog: How I Survived the World’s Most Outlandish Competitions), and Bill Hader (of Saturday Night Live). Hosted by Andy Richter, music by Jon Brion. The Barnsdall Theater, 4800 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA.

Yes, that’s right — hosted by Andy Richter, the actor famous for his portrayal of Kenny in the classic film, “Cabin Boy.” You can keep up with Evany and track her travels on her appearances page.

I would also like to suggest that The Secret Language of Sleep would make the perfect last-minute Mother’s Day gift for that special mother in your life. Pick it up at the McSweeney’s Store.
