VoIP Up Your Phone Jacks

There is a truly geeky DIY hack over at Engadget today that shows you how to connect your VoIP adapter to the existing phone system in your house or apartment, allowing you to use VoIP on your home’s built-in phone jacks.

As you can see from the picture here, and from the other pictures in the how-to, you need to be rather handy with a pair of needle-nose pliers in order to do this. Also, it will probably only work in the US and Canada. But, the result is well-worth it. You’re disconnected from the phone company’s backbone and you’re running a fully-VoIP enabled house! You will cause a great deal of harm to your phone access box, so, if you’re renting, make sure you know how to re-wire the box back to its original configuration before you attempt any cutting.

Either that, or make sure you cash the security deposit check before the landlord figures out what you’ve done.
