Weave Adds Personas to its Bag of Firefox Syncing Tricks
Mozilla Weave, the company’s data syncing platform for Firefox, has received an update and now includes the ability to sync Personas.
According to the Mozilla Labs blog the latest version of Weave (v0.6) also sees “major performance improvements,” and it’s obvious upon installation that the user interfaces for signing in and tweaking your settings have been dressed up as well.
We’ve been using Weave since its debut and have found it a handy, if slightly flawed way to keep multiple instances of Firefox in sync. For example, when moving from PC to PC, Weave ensures you get the same results when you start typing into the smart URL location bar, aka the “Awesome bar.” Your most recent set of open browser tabs can be reproduced on multiple machines, as well.
While the latest release adds Personas to the list of items Weave can sync, joining bookmarks, forms, history, passwords, preferences and recent tabs, Weave still lacks what many consider the killer feature — the ability to sync Firefox add-ons. Indeed, despite the updates, Weave’s potential — to totally sync every aspect of Firefox across computers — remains largely untapped.
However, while Weave may not have reached its end goal yet, this latest release is a nice reminder that the add-on continues to improve. Weave 0.6 adds a much slicker interface for signing in and setting up your Weave preferences. You can also now access that setup screen at any time by heading the URL about:weave.
Despite Mozilla’s claims of speed boosts, in our testing Weave 0.6 didn’t sync noticeably faster than previous versions, the update does, however, appear to solve an issue where Weave would get hung up during its initial sync when starting up Firefox.
Overall, while Weave 0.6 is relatively minor update, the stability improvements and much friendlier new user interface make it well worth the upgrade. Head over to Mozilla add-ons site to download the latest version of Weave.
