Yahoo Goes Web 2.0

Yahoo! has launched its new Yahoo! Answers service. A mix of social networking and search, the online community is based around user-generated content. Users ask questions, then other members of the community share their knowledge by answering specific questions.

Users’ questions are tagged by topic, so if you happen to be an expert on motorcycles or New York City, you can search for questions tagged for those topics and answer them. Once a few answers roll in, the asker chooses the most useful answer and the question is flagged as “resolved.” User profiles are searchable as well, giving the service that familiar, voyeuristic Friendster edge.

Yahoo! isn’t the first company to think of this. Wondir.com has been around for a couple of years, and Google Answers offers a fee-based approach. Either way, Yahoo’s community-based approach for the new service highlights the effectiveness of the new, user-generated content paradigm.
