Yahoo Joins the OpenSocial Ranks and a New OpenSocial Foundation Launches

opensocial.jpgYahoo has joined Google’s OpenSocial network, which is designed to be an open competitor to the Facebook Developer Platform.

In addition to Yahoo coming on board, Google has announced that MySpace, Google and Yahoo will partner to create the OpenSocial Foundation, a new non-profit organization which will reportedly help keep OpenSocial neutral and community-governed.

As part of the foundation announcement there is a new website, opensocial.org, which makes the effort look like it’s patterned after the OpenID Foundation, which serves similar goals with regards to OpenID.

OpenSocial applications are already available through MySpace, Plaxo and other sites. For more on what the OpenSocial Platform is and how it will affect users, check out our previous coverage.
