Zimbra Office Suite Adds Offline Support

zimbra.jpgUnfazed by the potential Microsoft takeover of its parent company, Yahoo, Zimbra has released a new version of its online office suite which adds support for Outlook 2007 and allows Zimbra users to interact with Zimbra Desktop even without an internet connection.

The latest version of Zimbra makes it possible to synchronize e-mail, contacts, calendars and to-do lists with with the latest version of Microsoft’s widely used Outlook e-mail manager.

Other new additions to the Zimbra toolset include Blackbery support, a new to-do application, an instant messenger client with group chat abilities, and the offline options for the Zimbra Desktop.

Zimbra is primarily designed for use within organizations and its integrated e-mail client, contact manager and group calendar web application have made it popular with start-ups, schools and small companies.

Although Zimbra lacks some of the tools you’ll find in competitors like Zoho (a database application for instance), the new synchronization options will appeal to organizations relying on Outlook 2007 for communications.

Zimbra 5.0 also brings some more integration with other Yahoo service in the form of “zimlets,” or widgets, that link up with the likes of Flickr, Yahoo Local, Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Search.

Going to the opposite direction, Yahoo plans to bring some Zimbra technology to Yahoo Mail and Calendar later this year. Provided Yahoo still exists later this year.
