<p>NewsBlur is a one-man operation that was humming along quite nicely, but when <a href="http://www.webmonkey.com/2013/03/its-not-just-reader-google-kills-chrome-rss-extension-too/">Google announced Reader would shutdown</a>, NewsBlur saw a massive traffic spike &#8212; in a few short days NewsBlur more than doubled its user base. How NewsBlur developer Samuel Clay <a href="http://blog.newsblur.com/post/45632737156/three-months-to-scale-newsblur">handled the influx of new users</a> should be required reading for anyone working on a small site without loads of funding and armies of developers.</p>
<p>&#8220;I was able to handle the 1,500 users who were using the service everyday,&#8221; writes Clay, &#8220;but when 50,000 users hit an uncachable and resource intensive backend, unless you&#8217;ve done your homework and load tested the living crap out of your entire stack, there&#8217;s going to be trouble brewing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Having tested NewsBlur a few times right after Google announced Reader was closing, I can vouch for the fact that there were times when the site was reduced to a crawl, but it came back to life remarkably quickly for a one-man operation. </p>
<p>In his postmortem, Clay details the moves he had to make to keep NewsBlur functioning under the heavy load &#8212; switching to new servers, adding a new mailing service (which then accidentally mailed Clay 250,000 error reports) and other moments of rapid, awkward growth.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also worth noting that Clay credits the ability to scale to his premium subscription model, writing that, &#8220;the immediate benefits of revenue have been very clear over the past few days.&#8221;</p>
<p>As for the future, Clay says he plans to work on &#8220;scaling, scaling, scaling,&#8221; launching a visual refresh (which you can <a href="http://dev.newsblur.com/">preview at dev.newsblur.com</a>) and listening to feedback from the service&#8217;s host of new users.</p>

The survey, which ALA started back in 2007, attempts to track and analyze information about webmonkeys&#8217; (curiously, ALA refers to us as &#8220;web professionals,&#8221; whatever those are) backgrounds, skills, work, salaries and more.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re a web developer and want to be counted in what is one of the only research projects of its kind, head on over to take the new survey. All the data is collected anonymously and goes toward painting a more complete picture of the industry.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;d like to see the results of past surveys, ALA recently <a href="http://aneventapart.com/alasurvey2009/00.html">published its findings from the 2009 survey</a>, which, though not radically different from 2008, do reflect the changing economic times &#8212; the number of respondents reporting a salary decrease jumped dramatically from previous years and, overall, webmonkeys are markedly less confident about the future.</p>
<p>But not everything is doom and gloom. Among those who said that web-related work was their primary focus, nearly 92 percent were confident about their jobs &#8212; which we attribute to the new hope fostered by HTML5&#8242;s various APIs.</p>
<p>As always the raw, anonymized data from the 2009 survey is <a href="http://aneventapart.com/alasurvey2009/add.html">available to anyone</a> that would like to play with it.</p>

<p>SAN FRANCISCO &#8212; Adobe&#8217;s CTO wants to make it clear that the public <a href="http://www.webmonkey.com/2010/05/who-needs-flash/">battle between HTML5 and Flash</a> isn&#8217;t about technology, it&#8217;s about politics.</p>
<p>&#8220;The story is not about HTML5 vs. Flash,&#8221; Adobe&#8217;s Kevin Lynch says. &#8220;It&#8217;s about freedom of choice in the industry.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lynch says developers should be able to use whatever tools they want to create whatever experiences they want on the web.</p>
<p>&#8220;There are some who would like to wall off parts of the web and require you to get their approval to create something,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>Lynch spoke Wednesday morning at the <a href="http://www.web2expo.com/">Web 2.0 Expo</a> taking place here at Moscone West. The twice-per-year developer conference focuses on <a href="http://www.webmonkey.com/2010/05/8-sessions-you-shouldnt-miss-at-web-20-expo/">all things web</a>, and though the audience is primarily made up of developers, the talks often turn to current events in the tech world.</p>
<p>Adobe has certainly been in the news quite a bit lately, with its Flash platform and Flash Player being derided by Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who has <a href="http://www.webmonkey.com/2010/04/apple-taunts-flash-with-list-of-ipad-ready-websites/">disallowed Flash on the iPad</a> and the company&#8217;s other mobile devices, and has banned apps created in Flash from being sold in the company&#8217;s App Store by changing the wording of the developer&#8217;s agreement for its latest iPhone OS.</p>
<p>Lynch didn&#8217;t refer to Apple by name until prompted by Web 2.0 Expo program chair Brady Forrest, who was interviewing Lynch on stage.</p>
<p>&#8220;Are you referring to Apple and the iPhone,&#8221; Forrest asked.</p>
<p>Lynch shot back: &#8220;Are you reading between the lines?&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Apple&#8217;s playing this strategy where they want to create a walled garden around what people use,&#8221; Lynch continued.</p>
<p><span id="more-47311"></span></p>
<p>He turned to an analogy he&#8217;s used in the past: the development of railroads in the United States in the 1800s.</p>
<p>&#8220;Part of the competitive dynamic at that time was that people were using different gauge rails for each section of the route,&#8221; he says.  If you wanted to move your freight on somebody else&#8217;s section of railroad, you had to unload everything and put it into different cars. The same cars couldn&#8217;t run on different sections of the rail.</p>
<p>&#8220;That wasn&#8217;t good for industry. The &#8216;gauge of rails&#8217; today is writing code for particular operating systems.&#8221;</p>
<p>One of Jobs&#8217; big <a href="http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/">arguments against Flash</a> is that apps written for the iPhone and iPad using Adobe&#8217;s Flash development tools don&#8217;t work properly on Apple&#8217;s mobile platform. His company has gone as far as banning them, citing this shortcoming as the reason.</p>
<p>Lynch says it&#8217;s a myth that cross-platform code can&#8217;t retain the intricacies of a specific platform.</p>
<p>&#8220;You don&#8217;t lose expressiveness or fidelity by cross-compiling applications,&#8221; he says. &#8220;It&#8217;s disingenuous to say that cross-compiled code won&#8217;t be able to take full advantage of any particular device.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The technology issue Apple has with us is not that our tech doesn&#8217;t work, it&#8217;s that it does work. We don&#8217;t want to play a technology game when Apple is playing a legal game. We&#8217;re not going to play that game, we&#8217;re going to concentrate on everyone else.&#8221;</p>
<p>To that point, Lynch talked a little bit about the Open Screen Project, the Adobe-led initiative to get Flash software integrated into tablets and other mobile devices from various companies to take advantage of hardware acceleration and specific hardware features, like touchscreens, cameras and GPS sensors. Adobe has a booth at the expo  where attendees can play with prototypes of different tablets running Flash.</p>
<p>Lynch also had some nice things to say about HTML5 and its many capabilities.</p>
<p>&#8220;HTML5 is the best thing that&#8217;s happened in browsers for a long time,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Innovation happening in the browser again.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lynch, who worked on the initial launch of Dreamweaver at Macromedia in the mid-&#8217;90s, took us back to what things were like back then.</p>
<p>&#8220;DHTML was supposed to take off and it didn&#8217;t. We went through a period of stagnation in HTML, which made room for Flash to grow.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;We will keep making tools for people to create experiences in HTML5,&#8221; he says, referring to Dreamweaver and other products in Adobe&#8217;s Creative Suite.</p>
<p>As for Flash&#8217;s future: &#8220;We will continue to work on Flash, filling in holes as fast as we can and developing it at a much faster pace than we have previously,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>Amid the current turmoil, Adobe released a <a href="http://www.webmonkey.com/2010/04/flash-faces-down-threats-on-adobes-big-day/">new version of the Flash development app</a> last month and is actively developing its <a href="http://www.webmonkey.com/2010/04/adobe-revamps-flash-player-for-netbooks-p2p-private-browsing/">next Flash Player</a>.</p>

<p><strong>5.</strong> He explains that you will be responsible to his organization&#8217;s &#8220;website committee.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>4.</strong> He wants to know if you know how to &#8220;do Flash.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>3.</strong> He wants his start-up site to be &#8220;kinda like eBay.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>2.</strong> He could actually build the site himself but he just doesn&#8217;t have the time.</p>
<p><strong>1.</strong> He&#8217;s looking for a new &#8220;webmaster.&#8221;</p>

<p>The world&#8217;s most popular office software suite is making its way onto the web, but it&#8217;s doing so one baby step at a time.</p>
<p>As expected, Microsoft announced more details around its <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/office/2010/">Office 2010</a> suite at an event in New Orleans Monday morning. Along with enhancements to the popular documents and productivity tools, the company also showed off how four of the suite&#8217;s key apps &#8212; Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote &#8212; will be deployed on the web as browser-based applications. Microsoft also announced pricing and availability for Office Web Apps. Beta invites will go out in late August and final versions &#8212; both paid and free &#8212; will be available in early 2010.</p>
<p>Microsoft first unvieled <a href="http://www.webmonkey.com/blog/PDC_2008:_Look_Out_Google_Docs__Here_Comes_MS_Office_for_the_Web">working demos</a> of these web-based apps in October, 2008 at a developer conference in Los Angeles, and Monday&#8217;s demos showed only a few new hints of what&#8217;s to come.</p>
<p>We won&#8217;t get our hands on Office Web Apps for another month, but what we do know is that they will be lightweight, dumbed-down versions of their desktop counterparts. They will remain closely tied to, and largely dependent on, the Windows desktop. This is understandable, since Office for the PC desktop has proven to be Microsft&#8217;s most valuable cash cow behind its Windows desktop and server products.</p>
<p>So while its competitors are gaining steam with full-blown productivity applications that run completely in the browser &#8212; namely <a href="http://docs.google.com/">Google Docs</a> and start-up Zoho with its <a href="http://www.zoho.com/">office suite</a> &#8212; Microsoft is still firmly entrenched in the &#8220;software plus services&#8221; camp.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what we know about Microsoft&#8217;s web strategy for Office 2010.</p>
<p><strong>Office Web Apps will be available for free</strong></p>
<p>The four key Office apps &#8212; Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote &#8212; will be free to anyone with a Windows Live account, but according to Microsoft&#8217;s Office 2010 FAQ (a <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/presskits/2010office/docs/Office2010QA.doc">Word document</a>), the free version will be ad-supported. Versions without ads will be available to people who buy Office Professional Plus and Office Standard 2010 licenses. The ad-free versions can also be made accessible privately by companies running SharePoint 2010 server.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re a regular Jane, a grandpa or a poor student who wants to access the free version, you have to log in to Windows Live, upload a Word, Excel or PowerPoint document to your SkyDrive, then choose to edit it in the browser. You make your edits, save your file, then it syncs back up to your SkyDrive. Note this is only convenient if you already have a local copy of Office.</p>
<p><strong>The experience has been dumbed down for the web</strong></p>
<p>The Office Web Apps are not intended to be stand-alone applications for editing and composing documents.</p>
<p>The browser-based tools have the basics, like changing fonts and styles, creating lists and tables, or messing with rows and columns in Excel. But it&#8217;s obvious that the bulk of the functionality will be reserved for the desktop apps. Microsoft&#8217;s <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2009/jul09/07-13Office2010WPCPR.mspx">announcement</a> positions Web Office Apps as offering &#8220;easy viewing and lightweight editing&#8221; &#8212; the word &#8220;lightweight&#8221; is used several times, in fact &#8212; clearly suggesting you&#8217;re only getting a taste.</p>
<p>The screenshots and <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/presskits/2010office/Default.aspx">official video demos</a> that are available do not show any app-specific functionality for printing documents. There&#8217;s also no indication what sorts of tools exist for things like generating charts and graphs from scratch &#8212; something Google offers through its <a href="http://code.google.com/apis/chart/">Chart API</a>.</p>
<p>At any point in the online version, you can download your document and continue editing it in Word on the desktop. You&#8217;re even encouraged to do so &#8212; <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/presskits/2010office/imageGallery.aspx">screenshots released Monday</a> show a big button in the user interface inviting you to &#8220;Continue in Word&#8221; or &#8220;Continue in Excel.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>You won&#8217;t need to use Internet Explorer</strong></p>
<p>In the FAQ, Microsoft says, &#8220;Office Web Apps are designed to work with Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox.&#8221; Chrome isn&#8217;t supported because (Microsoft says) it has such minor market share.</p>
<p>If you want to see the apps running in Firefox, check out <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/scobleizer/videos/29/">Robert Scoble&#8217;s video interview</a> with a Microsoft representative, who shows how similar the experience is in both IE and Firefox.</p>
<p><strong>You won&#8217;t need Silverlight</strong></p>
<p>A few advanced functions of Office Web Apps will require Silverlight, but there&#8217;s no plug-in required for the basics like editing and saving. Almost everything is pure standards-compliant Ajax, so the apps won&#8217;t be crippled if you don&#8217;t have Silverlight.</p>
<p>The Office Web Apps <a href="http://www.webmonkey.com/blog/PDC_2008:_Look_Out_Google_Docs__Here_Comes_MS_Office_for_the_Web">demos I saw last October</a> were powered entirely by JavaScript and CSS (just like competing apps from Google and Zoho).</p>
<p><strong>Your docs will look really nice</strong></p>
<p>If you read Microsoft&#8217;s press materials, there&#8217;s much talk about &#8220;preserving document fidelity&#8221; on the web, and it seems the company has paid particular attention to this. The interface even looks and behaves like the much-loved Ribbon introduced in Office 2007. When you open your document in the browser, it won&#8217;t break your formatting or ruin the indenting on complicated lists &#8212; a big gripe among Google Docs users.</p>
<p>The experience also degrades gracefully for smartphones, even the iPhone&#8217;s Mobile Safari.</p>
<p><strong>There will be real-time collaboration</strong></p>
<p>The web version of Excel will have real-time collaboration, meaning two people can edit the same spreadsheet at once and see each other&#8217;s edits.</p>
<p>Microsoft says it&#8217;s going to include real-time editing in Word and PowerPoint later, but that it chose not to include it in the initial release for technical reasons. Instead, you can enable e-mail and IM notifications that tell you when changes are made.</p>
<p>Both Zoho and Google Docs have embedded chat and real-time editing. Google&#8217;s implementation is still a little janky, but Wave, a similar Google app with more advanced real-time collaboration technology &#8212; you see edits almost instantly, right down to keystroke &#8212; shows even more promise.</p>
<p><strong>Office Live Workspaces is kaput</strong></p>
<p>Microsoft&#8217;s current implementation of document editing in the browser, <a href="http://workspace.officelive.com/en-us/office-web-applications">Office Live Workspaces</a>, is being discontinued and rolled into Windows Live. Expect everything to be rebranded and redirected to Office Web Apps when it launches in 2010.</p>

The popular domain registrar and website hosting company has been having coughing fits for a few days. Service has been intermittent, with some users complaining of outages on the company&#8217;s web servers as well as its e-mail and data storage services.</p>
<p>Turns out the problem was the result of a DDoS attack.</p>
<p>Today, this e-mail was sent out, and the company posted the same note on its website:</p>
<blockquote><p>For the past three days Register.com has been experiencing intermittent service disruptions as a result of a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack – an intentionally malicious flooding of our systems from various points across the internet. We know the disruption of business this has caused our customers is unacceptable, and we are working round the clock to combat it. <p>Given laptops, web-based tools and an abundance of free WiFi, most of us can do our jobs from just about anywhere. But how many of us actually take advantage of that fact?</p>
<p>Well, at least two.</p>
<p>Pittsburgh web designers Nathan Swartz and Olivia Meiring, along with their 7-year-old son Tristan, are on a yearlong journey around the United States. They live, work, sleep and travel all within the confines of their 100-square-foot RV. As they say on their travel blog, <a href="http://tumblewagon.com/">Tumblewagon.com</a>, &#8220;That leaves a lot of room for the backyard.&#8221;</p>
<p>Webmonkey caught up with Nathan Swartz in Austin, Texas, where the family plans to spend about a month. In an e-mail interview, we asked Swartz how he and his wife balance their roles as vagabond freelance designers, home-school teachers and rig drivers.</p>
<p><strong>Webmonkey:</strong> Where did you get the idea to drive around the country for a year?</p>
<p><strong>Nathan Swartz:</strong> Well, I&#8217;ve always loved taking road trips. Since I took my first cross-country trip about five years ago, I&#8217;ve done something every year. My wife is from South Africa and has lived in Brighton, England, and traveled Europe and now is living here, so she loves adventure too. Our son is young enough that we can home-school him — or &#8220;road-school&#8221; as we like to call it. Add freelancing and the flexibility that gives us and it just seemed natural to take advantage of this while we can. Who knows when Wal-Mart will come out with a web design section in their stores and we&#8217;ll have to go back to selling coffee or something, you know?</p>
<p><strong>Webmonkey:</strong> What did you have to do at home in Pittsburgh to get ready for this trip? What happened to where you live and where&#8217;s your mail going?</p>
<p><strong>Swartz:</strong> Well, we had to save up a nice chunk of cash, since between my credit and the state of the economy, we weren&#8217;t exactly going to get a car loan for the RV we live in. Aside from that, we basically just gave most of our stuff away to Goodwill and put a few things into storage. We were just renting an apartment, so when our lease was up, so was our obligation to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is a really cool city, by the way, and we&#8217;re fortunate to have gotten to live in such a cool place, but having been in western Pennsylvania most of my life, I just really wanted a change of scenery.</p>
<p>As far as getting mail, that&#8217;s a bit more tricky. First and foremost, I try to get paid via Google Checkout and handle everything we can via e-mail. When someone just has to mail us something, you know, because they refuse to let go of the Jurassic period, we use <a href="http://www.earthclassmail.com/">Earth Class Mail</a>. It&#8217;s a website that gives you a physical address — in our case a Portland P.O. box — and then you can check your mail online. They&#8217;ll scan stuff for you so that you can just read it right on their website, and then you can have things forwarded to wherever you&#8217;re staying if you need a piece of mail in hand. I&#8217;d prefer to never need a physical address, but the world just isn&#8217;t ready to stop stuffing pieces of trees into little boxes yet, I suppose.</p>
<p><strong>Webmonkey:</strong> How does work <em>work</em>? When do you get work done, how do you get a connection and how do you keep a work/life balance when work and life are both within 100 square feet?</p>
<p><strong>Swartz:</strong> This was one of the most fun parts of the whole preparation, sorting out when we&#8217;d work, making sure we&#8217;d have time, the technology, et cetera. First of all, aside from just working, both of us are teaching our son, Tristan, four days a week. We take turns. My wife, Olivia, does Mondays and Tuesdays and I do Wednesdays and Thursdays. I personally do most of my work on the days I&#8217;m not teaching, and then a little in the afternoons of the days I am. I&#8217;m probably only working 20 hours a week or less now though, compared to closer to 40 hours per week when we lived in our apartment in Pittsburgh. Expenses are lower living in the RV, and to be honest, I&#8217;m really trying to explore more than I work. That might sound &#8220;la-dee-da&#8221; or something, but the amount of money I can make from freelancing isn&#8217;t necessarily the amount I want to, you know? I&#8217;d rather have $10 and two days to spend it than $500 and no time left to explore the places we&#8217;re visiting.</p>
<p>Of course, we do still work and have to pay some bills and whatnot, so we use the internet connections on our iPhones and we&#8217;ve also got Sprint AirCards. The iPhone connection is mostly just for sending e-mail and checking on things that don&#8217;t require any coding or heavy lifting, and the Sprint cards do the bulk of the work. So far we&#8217;ve had pretty good luck. Only about 10 percent of the campgrounds we&#8217;ve stayed in have absolutely no connection. Basically, with Sprint&#8217;s connection we&#8217;re not exactly &#8220;high speed,&#8221; but it&#8217;s enough to get the job done. Reminds me of web design in the earlier part of the century, when you&#8217;d spend an hour coding and three hours uploading the two lines of code you changed.</p>
<p>One thing I have noticed is that while Pittsburgh, for example, is getting to the point of being nearly blanketed with free WiFi spots, that isn&#8217;t the case in most of the country. State parks, campgrounds and RV lots generally don&#8217;t have WiFi, so you&#8217;ve got to bring your own internet.</p>
<p><strong>Webmonkey:</strong> Your son is also on the trip. What&#8217;s it like for him? How is school, play and bedtime different for him?</p>
<p><strong>Swartz:</strong> He&#8217;s all about the experience of living in new places and he&#8217;s really good at making &#8220;friends for a day.&#8221; I&#8217;m the total opposite; it takes me five years just to meet my neighbors, but he&#8217;s off jumping in trees and riding bikes with whatever other kids are around in the campgrounds where we live.</p>
<p>As far as school, since he&#8217;s the only kid in his class, school doesn&#8217;t take six to eight hours a day. More like three hours, and it&#8217;s only four days a week. He&#8217;s learning important stuff like how to pronounce the alphabet and read and some math, sure. But he learns way more really important stuff like how to skip stones, navigate a map, ride a bike without coaster brakes and even some Spanish. And because school isn&#8217;t such a forced thing, where he has to sit still for the majority of the day, he&#8217;s much more open to learning things when it is time. Which, honestly, is all the time. He&#8217;s always asking things like &#8220;Why do people build skyscrapers?&#8221; and stuff like that as we just wander around our neighborhoods.</p>
<p>As far as bedtime, he&#8217;s a heavy sleeper. So even though Olivia and I are talking and hanging out only 10 feet away with no doors, he passes right out, ready for another day to come.</p>
<p><strong>Webmonkey:</strong> What advice do you have for someone wanting to join the ranks of the vagabond web designers?</p>
<p><strong>Swartz:</strong> It&#8217;s definitely worth it. I have no idea how long we&#8217;ll be able to keep up this great freelance industry that seems to be abundant in the web design world, but our generation is super lucky. We&#8217;ve got the internet — and connections to it — spreading like wildfire, and the global economy means people don&#8217;t really care if they can meet you face-to-face. Just make sure you&#8217;re able to set expectations for your clients. I find that once they know that you&#8217;re off being an adventurer, whether from jealousy or admiration or whatever, they&#8217;re usually like &#8220;Cool, let me know when you get back to civilization.&#8221; It&#8217;s one thing if you don&#8217;t answer your phone because you&#8217;re a bad freelancer, it&#8217;s another if it&#8217;s because you&#8217;re in the middle of Yellowstone.</p>

The service has been spotty ever since a significant outage last week left an untold number of customers without access to e-mail and other Google web services like Calendar and Docs.</p>
<p>According to numerous posts to personal blogs and Twitter, Gmail users — in several locations, but mostly in the New York area — are reporting that Gmail is down or that they&#8217;re experiencing <a href="http://twitter.com/Minda_Zetlin/statuses/967680345">reduced</a> <a href="http://twitter.com/webwright/statuses/967668283">functionality</a>. A search of <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=gmail">recent tweets</a> shows even more problems, including threading not working properly, IMAP access not working, extremely slow page loads or the Gmail site not loading at all, instead showing a blank page.</p>
<p>Though Monday&#8217;s problems are causing headaches, they don&#8217;t yet add up to last week&#8217;s trauma. Last Thursday night, <a href="http://www.webmonkey.com/blog/Gmail_Outage_Hits_Paying_Customers_Where_it_Hurts">Google suffered a high-profile outage</a> to its Google Apps Premiere Edition (GAPE) service, which unlike free Gmail, is a paid service aimed at businesses. For some, the outage lasted over 24 hours.</p>
<p>On Sunday, blogger and small business owner Loren Baker saw his entire Google account locked out for 15 hours, apparently through no fault of his own. As Baker writes on his <a href="http://www.searchenginejournal.com/open-letter-to-google-why-have-you-taken-away-my-google-gmail-accounts/7873/">Search Engine Journal blog</a>, he considers Gmail a critical part of his business, and when the service fails, his business suffers greatly.</p>
<p>&#8220;Since Google has decided to take my account away from me, the nucleus of our company communications has been taken away and now is replaced by a black hole,&#8221; Baker writes.&#8221;<span id="more-7873"></span> My small business communications are now ruined until my account is reestablished.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s certainly a view shared by many a small business owner relying on web applications and cloud computing resources of any kind. It&#8217;s a hurdle the industry as a whole is struggling to overcome as customers weigh the convenience of webapps with their apparent lack of reliability.</p>
<p>All in all, last week was a bumpy one for Google. Aside from user accounts locking up and GAPE e-mail failing, the company also pushed out a redesign to its iGoogle homepage that caused faithful users to cry foul.</p>

<p>The concept, which has merit, is that Apple&#8217;s computers cost more than PCs. Just how much? Apple hinted at the number in its press event Tuesday:</p>
<blockquote><p> Retail share: 17.6 percent market share of unit sales.</p>
<p>Revenue share: 31.3 percent of retail sales.</p></blockquote>
<p>In other words, where one in five computer sales is an Apple, these account for one of every three dollars spent. Apple has more share of the revenue because its computers cost more.</p>
<p>No matter how you crunch the numbers, they imply that Apple charges at least 50 percent more than other manufacturers, maybe even twice as much. This isn&#8217;t a new revelation, but it&#8217;s an interesting method used by Microsoft, which doesn&#8217;t even manufacture hardware.</p>
<p>Some of the discrepancy in price could be due to the low end of the market. As in, Apple doesn&#8217;t produce a cheap laptop and most everyone else does. Many who are in the market for laptops, including the education market Apple is so proud of, are comparing MacBooks to laptops that cost half as much. To them, the Apple tax feels real, even if it&#8217;s an unfair comparison.</p>
<p>Though PC makers, like Dell, offer an astoundingly large selection of laptops, it&#8217;s still hard to determine exactly what <strong>is</strong> comparable. Factor in the details that Apple includes to make its machines higher end (or at least seem that way) and you&#8217;re quickly comparing apples to&#8230;. Oh, you finish the joke.</p>
<p>Many web developers have switched to Mac for reasons beyond hardware features or cost. The built-in Unix-ish command line is comfortable. It&#8217;s easy to set up a development environment similar to the servers that hold our code.</p>
<p>Is the Apple tax worth it to you? Regardless of whether you&#8217;re an Apple user, what would you want from other computer manufacturers?</p>

Worse, developers are cowering in fear and playing along lest Apple get temperamental and exclude them from collecting their slice of the very profitable Apple pie.</p>
<p>We believe the strength of the development community is a very powerful thing. Apple, or any other big player, shouldn&#8217;t take that for granted. Community is the bread and butter of the internet and computer science, and it&#8217;s what Webmonkey is all about.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re providing a semi-anonymous forum for developers to document their involvement in the events in this debacle so far. We&#8217;ve used the web service <a href="http://www.dipity.com">Dipity</a> to create a timeline of App Store gaffs, rejections and bans. We encourage you to add to the timeline where you see fit. Drop in an event, link to your blog or a news story about a particular app &#8212; whatever you feel belongs.</p>
<p>We are doing this because we think it&#8217;s important to get the information out there. We don&#8217;t want you to get sued by Apple for breaking an NDA, so if that&#8217;s your worry, we encourage you to tell your friends about our timeline. <p>If you need some help catching up, here&#8217;s a brief rundown:</p>
<p>Apple forces everyone to sign an nondisclosure agreement (NDA) to download the software development kit &#8212; the very basic tools needed to start programming for the iPhone. The NDA forbids developers from talking about programming for the iPhone with other like-minded developers. No talking means no community, and you are 100 percent reliant on Apple for all of your development needs. Developers can&#8217;t even complain about the NDA under the NDA. Fear of Apple&#8217;s wrath gets worse. Once Apple started accepting applications, some apps got through and appeared on the App Store while others did not. It&#8217;s not a first come, first served process. There isn&#8217;t a thorough vetting process either &#8212; some apps get into the store by accident, before they even work. The process seems completely arbitrary.</p>
<p>These are the frustrations that have led some to pursue ad-hoc distribution outside of the Apple App Store. Some developers are also <a href="http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/09/will-google-and.html">preparing to jump ship </a>and begin coding for Google&#8217;s much more open Android mobile OS instead, albeit without the lucrative ecosystem of Apple&#8217;s App Store or the volume of potential customers in the iPhone&#8217;s user base.</p>
