Streaming Last.fm Radio Finds a Home on the iPhone

Last week we highlighted some of the cooler apps for your new iPhone 2.0 and the hits keep coming. The latest useful app is an iPhone/iPod Touch native version of the last.fm interface. The app is free, you’ll just need to trudge through the spamish sludge of the App Store (head to the music category).
Once you’ve got it installed the iPhone version of last.fm works pretty much like the website — stream music, mark favorites, skip duds, ban songs and more.
There are, however, a couple of missing features, most notably, no interaction with the iPod features of your phone. Of course you could use a desktop iTunes plugin like iScrobbler to upload your played tracks when you sync with your computer, but it would be nicer if the last.fm app could do it automatically — perhaps in a future upgrade.
The other annoying aspect highlights the big iPhone SDK drawback — no background apps. There may be some battery-saving merit to that restriction, but it means that apps like last.fm will be cut off when you open another app.
However, despite the caveats, if you’re a heavy last.fm user the new app should be welcome news. The last.fm team is also promising a slew of updates for future releases; we’ll be sure to keep you updated. Here’s a demo video of the new app in action:
