Latitude is one part of a geocode representing a point's north/south location. Zero latitude begins at the equator, and the numbers get larger as they move north, peaking at 90 at the North Pole. Southern hemisphere latitude is represented as negative numbers, which get smaller as they move south. The -90 latitude of the South Pole is the smallest latitude.
