VMWare Fusion Update Solves MacBook Air Woes

Vmwarefinal

VMWare has updated its popular software package Fusion, which allows Mac users to run Windows on the Mac OS X desktop. Fusion 1.1.2 addresses a number of bugs, adds support for MacBook Air CD/DVD drives and lays the foundations for those looking to upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3.

MacBook Air owners will be happy to note one major fix: the bug which caused Fusion to crash when a virtual CD/DVD drive was connected to the virtual machine, but there was no CD/DVD drive connected to the Air. Also new is support for burning CD and DVDs with the MacBook Air’s USB Superdrive.

Another welcome change for those running OS X 10.5 is that you can now backup virtual machines using Time Machine. Previously a bug in OS X prevented Time Machine from handling virtual machines correctly, but the OS X 10.5.2 update solved that issue, and Fusion has been updated to support Time Machine backups.

Deal in a Box: MacHeist Retail Bundle Puts Shareware on Shelves

macheist.jpgThe team behind the MacHeist software promotions has announced a new retail bundle. The bundle of Mac shareware applications can be purchased directly from the MacHeist site for $50, and, if all goes according to plan, will be available in stores later this year.

If you missed out on the online deals earlier this year, or if you want to fill out your collection of software packaging materials, the MacHeist retail bundle is your friend.

So far the details are a bit thin, but it doesn’t appear that the retail bundle will feature any additional MacHeist-style shenanigans. However, as with other MacHeist efforts, 25 percent of the purchase price will go to select charities. The team has also produced a slick, high-quality video teaser for MacHeist’s retail release.

aperture.jpgApple has updated Aperture, the company’s professional image workflow software, to include a new plugin architecture for outside developers looking to add functionality.

For the launch Apple has created a new Dodge & Burn plugin, which adds brush-based tools for dodge (lighten), burn (darken), contrast, saturation, sharpen and blur. But the real potential for the plugin tools lies with third party developers.

Apple says it is working with third-party developers to bring some of the more requested plugins to Aperture, including PictureCode, makers of Noise Ninja, a set of tools that help reduce the digital noise prevalent in some cameras.

Does Your Mac Need Anti-Virus Software?

applelogo.jpgMac fans have long touted the platform’s relative lack of viruses as a good reason to switch from a Windows PC. No one will dispute that there are far fewer Mac viruses out there, but there are some threats, which leaves many people wondering — do I need to run anti-virus software on my Mac?

While anti-virus software is a must have for Windows users, in the Mac community the subject doesn’t come up as often. Tidbits, a long time Mac user resource, recently published an insightful article on whether or not you need anti-virus software on your Mac.

Their conclusion? Probably not. That doesn’t mean you should be cocky about it though. No operating system, no matter how secure, is immune to user stupidity. But provided you don’t go downloading every bittorrent or warez file on the web, and you use a decent e-mail provider that scans attachments for viruses, your Mac is probably going to be okay.
