The Tao of PONG
Overview

by Jon Williams

Jon Williams [an error occurred while processing this directive]is a designer and programmer at Shovemedia. His skills in Flash, Java, and XML helped ioResearch win an award in technical merit at the 2001 Flash Forward Film Festival in New York City.

PONG is more than the feverishly addictive, paddle-based timesuck you remember from yesteryear — why, it's also the perfect metaphor for the complicated message routing concepts behind the creation of a multiuser environment. Once you master the back-and-forth of PONG, you can build almost anything.

So follow along as Jon sics Flash on the frontend, sets up Java on the backend, and ferries XML data objects between the two in this step-by-step wondertutorial.

But be warned: There's a lot to learn, and it comes on fast, so you might want to stretch out, first. OK, all limbered up? Then let the PONG begin!
