GMail Adds Official Greasemonkey Support

greasemonkey.jpggmail.jpgAs we hinted yesterday, there appears to be support for Greasemonkey built into the new GMail interface, which has been rolling out over the last few days. And indeed, Google has made it official, GMail supports Greasemonkey and there’s even a new documentation page for Greasemonkey developers looking to extend GMail.

So what does this mean for you? Well, with official objects and methods available to developers, tweaking GMail via outside scripts just got a whole lot easier. And that in turn means that you might see a growth spurt in the number of ways to customize GMail.

So far the GMail Macros script has been re-written and no doubt many more will be re-worked in the very near future. This should be great news for power users and hopefully we’ll see more Google properties (and other sites as well) embrace Greasemonkey.

The one caveat is that these new scripts will only work in the new version of GMail. If it hasn’t been activated in your account yet, sit tight you should see it in the next few days. However, if you depend heavily on the older extension you might want to stick with the old version anyway, at least until the developers port things over to the new.
