Create Your Own Newspaper With Instapaper
Marco Arment, developer of the popular Tumblr blogging tool, has new project by the name of Instapaper. Instapaper is a slick and fast little webapp that’s a bit like a bookmarking service such as Ma.gnolia or Del.icio.us, but considerably simpler.
Instapaper is designed to save things you find on the web, but don’t have time to read just then — for instance, a longer news piece or blog post that you know you want to read at some point in the future.
The service is dead simple to use. All you need to do to create an account is pick a username. If you want a password you can add one, but it isn’t necessary (your posts will be public unless you pick a password). Then just add the “Read Later” bookmarklet to your toolbar and use it to add pages. Adding a page is lightening fast and there’s no messing with metadata like tags or anything else.
When you return to Instapaper and login you’ll find your reading list waiting. And that’s about all there is to it.
Once you click through items on your reading list they’re marked as read and you can then delete them.
True, you could use a bookmarking site to accomplish all this, but Instapaper is incredibly lightweight and fast (making it an excellent choice for your iPhone or mobile device) and it makes a handy way to separate out things you want to read, but don’t necessarily want to save.
I’ve been using it in conjunction with Ma.gnolia such that things I want to read go into Instapaper and then if I like them enough I go ahead and bookmark them. Prior to Instapaper I would just keep things open in browser tabs, but this way I cut down on tab clutter.
