Extension Developers Race to Support Firefox 3

firefoxlogo.jpgNow that Firefox 3 has a release date — Tuesday, June 17 — the question becomes are my favorite extensions going to work? Of course the answer will vary by extension, but Mozilla’s Product Manager, Alex Polvi, has some good news: Greasemonkey, Delicious Bookmarks, and Update Notifer are all ready for Firefox 3.

Other popular extensions like Tab Mix Plus, Firebug, FoxyTunes and FireFTP are expected to ship Firefox 3.0-compatible version by June 17.

Among the extensions that probably won’t make the Tuesday deadline are Mouse Gestures and Minimize to Tray, though both are expected to release updates eventually.

Of course there are plenty of less popular extensions — which many user still consider essential — that won’t be ready in time for the final release of Firefox 3. However, compared to the arrival of Firefox 2, the extension compatibility situation is much better this time around.

If you’ve been putting off the Firefox 3 upgrade because you were waiting for all your favorite extensions to embrace the upgrade, it might be worth checking the Firefox add-on site to see if an updated version is available.
