Flickr Introduces Simpler, Faster Geotagging Tools

Flickrgeo

Popular photo-sharing site Flickr has introduced a simpler way to geotag your photos. The site now offers a link, “add to your map,” beside all your photographs. Click the new option and you’ll be greeted with a mini Yahoo Map. Just drag the shot where you want it and the geotags will be automatically added.

Previously geotagging required a trip to Flickr’s “Organizr” tool which is somewhat more complex and can take awhile to load. While Organizr is still the way to go for batch geotagging, the new features make it easier and faster to tag single uploads.

The new feature is especially handy from the iPhone since it allows you to add geotags without waiting for the Organizr interface to load. (Yes, we know there are some iPhone apps that preserve it, but if you’re uploading to Flickr via e-mail, the iPhone strips the geo EXIF data before sending).

Another nice feature in the new pop-up map is a recommendation system that tries to suggest landmarks and neighborhoods based on where you dropped your photo. It isn’t perfect, but for well-known locations like major cities or landmarks, it works pretty well.

It may not be a groundbreaking new feature, but it if you’ve been ignoring geotagging because it seemed too complicated, the new features offer a much easier way to map your photos.
