FriendFeed Invades Your Favorite Instant Messaging App

friendfeed IM updatesFriendFeed, the popular social network tracking service, has rolled out a new way to keep tabs on your friends. FriendFeed is now offering IM notifications, which means you can get updates via your favorite chat client.

If you’re following a decent number of people on FriendFeed that probably sounds like a recipe for update overload, but thankfully FriendFeed has baked in some nice ways to limit the number of updates sent to your chat client.

The easiest way to limit updates is to use the new control features in conjunction with Rooms and Groups. Just create a new group, add all the people you want to get IM updates for and then choose that group in your new IM preferences page.

Another very cool feature is the ability to get IM updates whenever someone comments on your own posts.

The best part of the new IM integration though is the method FriendFeed came up with for commenting on items directly from your chat client. As you can see in the screenshot above, every item gets assigned a prefix @ followed by a number. To comment on a post you just need to send a message in the format: @1 your comment.

Similarly, to post a message to your own feed, prefix the item with @me, room posts use the @roomname preface and if you want to “like” something, send like N where N is the item number in the chat.

For a full list of commands available, send “help” or check out the FriendFeed IM about page.
