Gmail Labs Adds New Interface Tweaks

gmailGoogle has rolled out some new experimental features for Gmail that allow you to rearrange the sidebar contents, create label shortcuts and use more label colors. The new features can be accessed by visiting your Gmail Settings and clicking the Labs tab.

The “Navbar drag and drop” feature allows you to drag and drop the left-hand navigation boxes, for example, to put the labels box above the chat box. It’s a nice start, but we’d like a way to rearrange, as well as show and hide, the contents of the boxes themselves — for instance, it would be nice if you could put your most frequently used labels just below the inbox link.

Other new features from Gmail Labs include the ability to use more colors for your labels and a new keyboard shortcut for quickly jumping between labels. The keyboard shortcut allows you to hit ‘g’ then ‘l’ to display a popup for selecting a label to jump to.
