More on the Reddit Acquisition
As you’ve probably all heard by now, Wired Digital has acquired Reddit.com. We’re all really excited about this since we’ve been following Reddit — not to mention linking to and discussing stories we found there — ever since the site launched last year. The Reddit guys are flying out here shortly, and we’re going to set them up in the corner office suite (where many a rowdy game of Guitar Hero has taken place, all of which I have dominated) that overlooks the Bay Bridge and all of San Francisco’s SOMA district. Personally, I’m really looking forward to meeting them and working with them.
People want to know: What’s going to happen to Reddit? The site won’t suffer at all from the acquisition. They’re getting all of the room they need to improve, expand and grow the site. It’s only going to get better.
The other question is what this means for Wired News, Wired Digital and CondeNet. We’re hoping to eventually bring the personalized and unique link aggregation technologies used on Reddit to Wired News and Wired magazine in our efforts to build a community around the brand. CondeNet also wants to let the Reddit guys go nuts and develop other community news gathering and discussion tools that we can roll out onto our other sites.
On a personal note, it’s truly heartwarming for me to see Wired Digital alive and healthy yet again. When I first started out at Webmonkey about 6 and a half years ago, the Wired Digital office was a thriving place. Then we went through some hard times and lost quite a bit of our mojo. Since we’ve landed at our new home here at CondeNet, we’ve gained a lot of it back. And now we’re seeing Wired Digital growing again. This place is beginning to feel more and more like what it was long ago — a real media company.
