New Movable Type Pro Wants to Turn Your Blog into a Social Network

MtproSix Apart has rolled out a significant upgrade for its flagship Movable Type blog publishing software. Movable Type 4.2 and the all new Movable Type Pro edition feature numerous speed boosts and, in the case of the Pro version, add in a bundle of social networking tools.

Movable Type Pro allows you turn your blog into a full social network platform, with features like user registration, profiles, ratings, forums, “following” tools, and more.

In addition to allowing readers to register at your site (and there’s OpenID support for registration) Movable Type Pro allows anyone who joins your site to submit content. Of course you have full administrative control over who can submit and the ability to review submissions.

From the contributor’s end, there are new profile pages which can the link out to any published posts on the site (in addition to comments and other site activity).

Among the changes in Movable Type 4.2 are better spam filtering for comments, simplified templates with live template previews and some new APIs for OpenID support, OAuth libraries, and the ability to add in plugins to connect with the iPhone.

The update is packed with features — see the Six Apart blog post for more — and the pro version especially looks like a very nice option for sites that want a full community-in-a-box setup.

Be sure to check out the video below to see some of new social networking and site administration features in action.

Movable Type 4.2 is available for free under an open-source license or as part of Movable Type Pro which is free for the individual blogger, $400 for five users, and $1500 for 20 users.
