Start Your Engines, Firefox 3 Attempts Download World Record

FirefoxFirefox fans, today is the day you’ve been waiting for — Firefox 3 arrives at 10AM (PDT). We’ve already covered why you should upgrade and some great extensions to trick out your browser for post-installation bliss. The only thing left is to help Mozilla set a world record (Guinness-certified and all) for the most downloads in a single day.

We know what you’re thinking, what if Firefox fans are slow on the uptake — that’s a PR disaster right? Well, not really.

Since Mozilla pretty much dreamed up the category themselves there’s no specific number to beat, but already some 1.5 million people have pledged to download the browser today.

Not sure what time the downloads kick off in your time zone? Digital Inspiration has a handy map showing the local times around the world.

But we’ll let you in on a little secret — Firefox 3 is already available on Mozilla’s servers.

I’m not actually going to link to those files since they won’t count toward the record, but if you’re not interested in world records, you can grab a copy from http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=osx&lang=en-US.

Just swap “win” for “osx” if you’re on Windows and change the language param if you want something other than english.

However, if you exercise a bit of patience and wait for the official release, we’ll get to see just how many Firefox early adopters there really are.
